DRAM Procurement for OEM and EMS

Translate DRAM controller, organization, speed and temperature requirements into an OEM or EMS RFQ and an approved production supply decision.

Manufacturer references · 2026-10-29 · Application-specific qualification required

The purchasing decision

Match the full approved DRAM ordering code, organization and controller requirements before releasing a purchase.

Prepare these inputs:

  • Approved full MPN and BOM revision
  • Density in bits, data width and required timing
  • Temperature grade, package and scheduled quantities

What this helps produce: An exact-code quotation request or a separately identified candidate for engineering review.

Customer Problem

An EMS buyer is asked to purchase “8 Gb DDR4” for a production build. Multiple offers match that density but differ in bus width, speed, temperature or revision. If those differences are discovered only after delivery, the result can be a blocked build or an unplanned qualification exercise.

Before requesting volume pricing, have engineering identify the approved ordering code and define which changes require review. Procurement then compares actual supply against that controlled requirement.

Technical Background

Capacity is the product of addressable locations and data width; equal total bits do not imply an identical organization or controller configuration. Preserve x4, x8 or x16 organization and package identity in the RFQ.

The official Micron record for MT40A512M16LY-062E:E identifies an x16 DDR4 device. The ordering-code-level record is the useful reference, not a generic family or a memory-module description. Clock frequency and data rate also need distinct units.

Procurement Risks

  • A quoted speed grade may not satisfy the board’s approved timing configuration, even if a salesperson describes it as “faster.”
  • Commercial and industrial temperature variants can have different specified operating ranges; a temperature suffix alone does not establish application reliability or qualification.
  • A procurement team may plan a production schedule around material that has not been reserved, inspected or approved for substitution.

What to Verify

REVIEW ITEMWHY IT AFFECTS THE PURCHASE
Controller and configurationConfirm generation, density, organization and supported addressing or training configuration with the board team.
Ordering-code detailsRecord package, speed, temperature and revision; use the actual family’s ordering table.
Release statusDistinguish an approved production MPN from a candidate awaiting sample validation.
Production supply planAgree schedule, lot restrictions, packaging, quotation validity and how changes will be communicated.

Practical Checklist

  1. Request the full approved manufacturer code from the design owner.
  2. Specify density in bits and organization separately; do not confuse Gb with GB.
  3. List timing requirements with units and the relevant datasheet revision.
  4. Ask for proposed MPN, condition and delivery assumptions on each quotation line.
  5. If an alternative is proposed, reserve engineering and sample time before committing the build.

Illustrative procurement scenario

Illustrative production issue: the demand sheet lists 8 Gb DDR4 but omits x16 organization. The RFQ is corrected to the approved full MPN before bids are compared, preventing an x8 offer from being accepted solely on capacity.

How MemVanta Can Support Sourcing

MemVanta can organize OEM/EMS memory BOM lines, check complete-code information against available manufacturer sources and coordinate supply proposals.

Candidate variants are returned for engineering approval. We do not approve board timing, memory-controller configuration or production substitutions on the basis of density alone.

Original technical sources

Public sources checked on 2026-10-29. The background identifies manufacturer facts; the risk questions and checklists are MemVanta editorial guidance inferred for procurement planning. Current exact-device and host documentation controls design approval. Vendor documents may require sign-in and can change.

Exact DDR4 device specifications and vendor lifecycle label; reconfirm at quotation.

Engineering and quality checks before purchase
  • Board engineering must confirm controller limits, timing margins, organization and qualified revision.
  • Check lifecycle information and the latest manufacturer notices before a volume commitment.

Public-source review is not an engineering qualification, inspection result or manufacturer endorsement.
