DDR4 vs DDR5 for Component Procurement

Evaluate DDR4 and DDR5 at component and platform level, including controller support, rails, organization, board changes and qualification cost.

The purchasing decision

A DDR generation change is a platform decision, not a routine purchasing substitution.

Prepare these inputs:

  • Current approved DDR4 or DDR5 MPN
  • Processor/controller support and board constraints
  • Continuity demand versus new-platform qualification schedule

What this helps produce: Separate quotations for the existing design and any new-platform candidate.

Customer Problem

A buyer is offered DDR5 when a DDR4 device becomes difficult to source. The proposed generation appears newer and commercially attractive, but a generation change is a platform decision rather than a routine purchasing substitution.

Identify whether the task is to maintain the approved DDR4 design or to support a planned DDR5 redesign. Those paths need different quotations, engineering inputs and timing.

Technical Background

Micron’s DDR5 component comparison lists different supply-rail requirements for DDR4 and DDR5, including nominal VDD/VDDQ values of 1.2 V and 1.1 V respectively. These are representative component-family values; use the exact device datasheets for all rails and limits.

Controller support, signaling, timing, organization and physical implementation must be evaluated together. Memory-module features, connector compatibility and module power circuitry must not be transferred uncritically to discrete component selection.

Procurement Risks

  • Treating a generation upgrade as a same-footprint substitution can hide necessary controller, PCB, power or firmware changes.
  • Mixing MHz clock rate with MT/s transfer rate can produce an incorrect speed comparison.
  • A component price comparison can omit redesign, validation, manufacturing changes and the remaining legacy service obligation.

What to Verify

REVIEW ITEMWHY IT AFFECTS THE PURCHASE
Platform supportAsk the processor or memory-controller owner which generations, organizations and device densities are supported.
Electrical and mechanical requirementsCompare every required rail, package drawing, pin/ball function and board implementation using exact documents.
Timing and initializationReview controller training, timing configuration and firmware support rather than assuming a higher headline speed will work.
Procurement scopeSeparate continuity supply for the existing design from parts intended for a new qualified platform.

Practical Checklist

  1. State the approved memory generation explicitly in the RFQ.
  2. Keep original full MPN and proposed new-platform parts in separate BOM revisions.
  3. Compare rates using consistent units and manufacturer timing definitions.
  4. Include engineering validation and board-change lead time in the decision.
  5. Release production purchasing only after the selected platform and ordering code are approved.

Illustrative procurement scenario

Illustrative decision: purchasing asks for both an exact DDR4 continuity option and a separately labeled DDR5 design-in proposal. Engineering owns the redesign decision; the two offers are not compared as interchangeable stock.

How MemVanta Can Support Sourcing

MemVanta can review exact-code DDR4 requirements and organize available DDR5 candidate documentation for a separately scoped evaluation.

We can coordinate quotations and samples, but do not claim DDR5 is a direct replacement for a DDR4 component or approve controller and board compatibility.

Original technical sources

Public sources checked on 2026-10-29. The background identifies manufacturer facts; the risk questions and checklists are MemVanta editorial guidance inferred for procurement planning. Current exact-device and host documentation controls design approval. Vendor documents may require sign-in and can change.

Engineering and quality checks before purchase
  • Confirm all device rails and limits, controller support and PCB changes using the exact component and processor documents.
  • The guide does not qualify a DDR5 MPN or a module-to-component substitution.

Public-source review is not an engineering qualification, inspection result or manufacturer endorsement.
