Preserve every ordering-code distinction until the correct manufacturer reference resolves it.
Prepare these inputs:
- Original BOM text and complete offered MPN
- Available label and top-mark photographs
- Family-specific datasheet or ordering table
What this helps produce: A requested-versus-offered comparison identifying confirmed fields and unresolved differences.
Discuss this sourcing requirement ↗Customer Problem
The BOM contains a base number, a supplier sends a package photograph and a quotation adds a suffix that purchasing does not recognize. Without a controlled identity check, different speed, package, temperature or revision variants may be combined into one purchasing line.
Preserve the requested text exactly, then classify each identifier: full orderable MPN, base family, top marking, seller stock code or shipment identifier. Do not “clean” punctuation or remove suffixes before review.
Technical Background
Micron’s official decoder explains that FBGA package markings can be abbreviated relative to the full part number. A marking-to-MPN lookup helps identification but does not authenticate a physical lot.
The ISSI IS42S16400J ordering table lists -7TL and -7TLI separately for commercial and industrial temperature options. This demonstrates why suffix retention matters; it is not a rule that an I has the same meaning for every manufacturer.
Procurement Risks
- A valid family identifier can still refer to an unacceptable orderable configuration.
- Module numbering guides can be misapplied to discrete DRAM ICs, or one manufacturer’s suffix conventions can be copied to another.
- A clear-looking label can be treated as complete traceability even when the source chain remains undocumented.
What to Verify
| REVIEW ITEM | WHY IT AFFECTS THE PURCHASE |
|---|---|
| Requested versus offered code | Compare full text including hyphens, spaces, colon/revision markers and packaging suffixes, and clarify any difference. |
| Family-specific evidence | Use the original manufacturer’s ordering table for the exact family and product class. |
| Samsung and SK hynix requests | Request the relevant official device datasheet or ordering guide. No universal Samsung or SK hynix suffix decoder is asserted here. |
| Mark and lot relationship | Ask for available package/label photographs and records linking the identified device to the offered lot. |
Practical Checklist
- Retain full MPN and base number in separate fields.
- Ask the design owner to resolve abbreviated or incomplete BOM entries.
- Decode package, organization, speed, voltage and temperature using the correct family reference.
- Keep revision and shipment packaging information distinct from device identity.
- Record unresolved differences as approval conditions instead of silently accepting a near match.
Illustrative procurement scenario
Illustrative identity review: a quote for IS42S16400J-7TL is compared with an industrial -7TLI BOM line. The commercial variant is held for engineering review rather than merged with the required full code.
How MemVanta Can Support Sourcing
MemVanta can review complete-code requirements, request original documentation and organize discrepancies between a BOM, quotation and available labels.
We do not infer Samsung or SK hynix suffix meanings from another brand, or present a marking lookup as a counterfeit test. Final variant approval remains with the customer.

Engineering and quality checks before purchase
- Samsung and SK hynix family-specific suffix tables require original vendor documentation before any detailed decoding table is added.
- Verify actual labels and datasheet revision; do not generalize package-mark examples across products.
Public-source review is not an engineering qualification, inspection result or manufacturer endorsement.
